Jerusalem…Really?!

Photo of Jerusalem and the iconic Dome of the Rock (gold dome). I have to say that Jerusalem was by far the biggest disappointment on my entire trip. I had planned to spend 3 nights in Jerusalem, but when I got to Tel Aviv everyone I spoke with told me not to even waste one night there. Instead they told me to stay in Tel Aviv where the parties and beaches were and just take a day trip to the holy city. It was a place that I was really looking forward to visiting because I heard so much about it and historically it’s an incredibly important site. My expectations were pretty high; however, when I got there, it was a big let down. Usually when you go to a historic or “old” place normally you’d expect to somewhat relive the history of the place and be impressed by its charm. For me, Jerusalem had none of that. Yes, the old city has narrow streets with old brick buildings but a shitload of the old city is mostly covered up with shops selling all sorts of things including countless religious souvenirs. It was essentially like walking through one giant flea market or a religious Disneyland….BORING! I’m not religious so I had a hard time understanding why on earth people have been fighting over this crap place for sooooooooo long. But that’s fine with me…I’ll let all the religious wackos fight over this city and save all the beautiful places in the world just for me.
